Cardiovascular System

Afterload

Definition

The resistance the left ventricle must overcome to eject blood into the aorta during systole. Higher afterload increases cardiac workload and oxygen demand.

Clinical Use

A patient with uncontrolled hypertension has elevated afterload, so the nurse anticipates an order for an ACE inhibitor to reduce vascular resistance and ease the heart's workload.
