Hypoxemia
Definition
An abnormally low level of oxygen in the arterial blood, typically a PaO2 below 80 mmHg or oxygen saturation under 90%. It deprives tissues of adequate oxygen.
Clinical Use
The pulse oximeter reads 86% on a patient with pneumonia; recognizing hypoxemia, the nurse increases supplemental oxygen and reassesses saturation within minutes.
