Sepsis

Definition

A life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated body response to infection. It can rapidly progress to septic shock and death.

Clinical Use

A patient with pneumonia becomes hypotensive, tachycardic, and febrile; recognizing sepsis, the nurse draws blood cultures and starts the prescribed fluid resuscitation and antibiotics promptly.
